Some 22 years ago or so, I and a friend were up searching portions of what is known as the Nunez map of 1771....
My friend grew up in the area and knew the mountains east of the valley like the back of his hand....
On the day previously mentioned while engaged in a discussion regarding an aspen carving he had found, driving down the dirt road he spotted a familiar camp site and told me the story of his friend who had camped there in the past quite often, he wasn't there at this time and I think it was near the time he was starting to have health issues due to old age.... His friend was a school teacher in Utah County and each spring when school let out he would pack up and spend his summers on the mountain easterly of the valley, my friend would visit him frequently.. The school teacher passed away in 2021...
The teacher was an explorer of sort having heard stories about Spanish occupation and I am sure my friend fed him a few stories as well... spotting the old familiar camp spot of the teacher, sparked a story in my friend and he relayed it to me...
My friend and the teacher were out hiking one day just checking possibilities... when the teacher turned to my friend and said, " I need to tell you something, I need to tell someone”... he said I haven't told anybody about this except one friend living in Salt Lake, because I just don't think anyone would believe me...
About a year ago I was hiking around in this area where we now are, and just looking for anything... nothing in particular. I was walking along trying to gaze at every little detail hoping to find evidence of just anything when all of a sudden, a voice from behind me said, hello!, I damned near jumped out of my skin... I turned around to find a very finely dressed Indian on a beautiful pale horse. He was wearing a nice white shirt with an old style bolo tie, Nice blue jeans and very nice cowboy hat and boots... what are ya doin up here? he said. Oh just explorin looking for anything old... and a little more chit chat went on and then the Indian said, I have something to show you... its not far... . and he asked me to follow him... Ok I said... after about 100 yards or so, he stops and points to the ground... right there he said, never getting off his horse... sweep the dirt there to the side... of which I did exposing a straight line like a door meeting a door frame... follow it he said... so I kept sweeping the dirt away and exposed what was apparently a rectangular door horizontal to the ground,,,, then he points to a semi large rock situated on the door and says move that stone off the door so I did, then he says now step off the door... and I did and the ground it seemed started to rise but it was the door opening without any help for me... the door stopped at about a 45 degree angle and there were steps leading down in... Go on! He said... go down in... tell me what you see...excited but cautiously I made my way down the steps not knowing what to expect and then I could see from the light from the opening what appeared to be a thick vein of gold on the side wall, to me it looked like an upside down state of Idaho. Whatta ya see he said... I told the Indian there is a big vein of what looks to be gold on the wall in here and it looks like the upside down state of Idaho....That's right he said... now come on back out hear.... push the door down, move the rock back... cover the door back up with dirt...etc.. all in reverse of what he said to open it.... what is this place I said.... He ignored my question and said, now listen up... There are many of these here in this area, and if you find any of them you may take for your needs, use your discretion... but as for this location, leave it alone! I acknowledged and thanked him... I offered my hand to shake his... his hands did not move and he asked, are you testing me? No no I said and bent down to spread the dirt a bit more... when I stood up, he was gone, I heard nothing, no horse steps leaving no nothing....
The teacher told my friend he could not show him where it was, only that it was close by, but he did give him clues of which my friend continued to look. One day he and I were investigating an aspen carving he had found, it was the first authentic carving I had seen in near 8 years, searching further we found 4 more and today of all the surviving authentic Aspen carvings that I know of, there are 5 remaining, four of which are at this location. As we looked at the trees and took picture and coordinates, he made a hand gesture in the direction of the site where the door was found and an identifying feature...
I don't know what has happened to my friend I have tried email, texts and calls to get permissions for this story… which is why I left out certain details... it is as if he has dropped off the face of the planet... I have a hunch however as to where to find him....
I don't believe this site is Spanish related, if not then who and what else could possibly be in this seeming Mine/Vault?
UPDATE... I have since re-connected with my friend and hope to see him soon...
