The Lincoln Assassination

The Lincoln Assassination

and the events leading to it

The Lincoln Assassination is an unresolved mystery which has confounded many historians for years. The question of  the Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton, his associates and Secret Agents in a possible cover-up and conspiracy, still haunt many scholars to this day, whether they admit it or not. I have often in the past accused him of being the first President as to having committed treason against the Free Republic, after careful consideration, I would now tend to believe he never knew what was happening.

In order to unravel this mystery, one needs to consider many things, not only significant events of the day directly or even seeming indirectly related, but one must push back even further in history and consider even the very foundation of the creation of this country in an effort to seek a motive. Keep in mind, History repeats itself; there is a pattern in all things.

Where does the assassination fit into the building of this Nation or the overthrow? What was happening at the time? Where in history has similar events taken place? I have found that by taking the basic information regarding each suspected related event, and those suspect of having been involved, even the regurgitated information found in the all knowing contents of WIKI, compiling it, and reading it, a plot and motive begins to unfold… Now am no genius, and certainly not a political genius or master of understanding the principles of deceit, misinformation and the like, or what I would call secret combinations found within the Biblical scriptures and others. All the while, keep in mind, with my open admittance, I could be wrong.

By compiling this basic information found for example in Wiki, knowing it is taken from one recent former writer and he having borrowed his from a recent writer before him, and so on… a preservation of motive in an attempt, knowingly or unknowingly, to cover the truth and ease the average readers mind in not asking certain questions in which the writer knows as he writes, the reader will question, but that writer of intentional lies, will insert a comment appearing to answer the readers questioning just as it occurs, and the reader will read on never think to ask again, after all his question was answered right?  In other words, in every conflict in which truth must be hidden, the victor in the conflict writes the history and that original writer in his attempts to tell only one side of the conflict, or to ease the inquiring mind, reveals himself, and the truth of the conflict he attempts to cover up. This practice is preserved in the regurgitation process whether they see it or not. It is most profound in the original source material; however, fortunately we have the accuracy of the wiki writer to thank for their melancholic nature in quoting.

A lie, in one way or another, will always reveal itself when confronted with truth.

With this said, lets step back in time, to the foundation of the creation of this Nation.

As many of my readers know, I include sources often not considered by others simply because of their own prejudices and inability to consider ALL sources… although it is not necessary for me to include, because there is overwhelming evidence as to why the people came here to escape bondage and captivity, the following is a passage from Mormon scripture, specifically Nephi 1: 12-15

12 And I looked and beheld a man among the Gentiles, who was separated from the seed of my brethren by the many waters; and I beheld the Spirit of God, that it came down and wrought upon the man; and he went forth upon the many waters, even unto the seed of my brethren, who were in the promised land.

13 And it came to pass that I beheld the Spirit of God, that it wrought upon other Gentiles; and they went forth out of captivity, upon the many waters.

14 And it came to pass that I beheld many multitudes of the Gentiles upon the land of promise; and I beheld the wrath of God, that it was upon the seed of my brethren; and they were scattered before the Gentiles and were smitten.

15 And I beheld the Spirit of the Lord, that it was upon the Gentiles, and they did prosper an obtain the land for their inheritance; and I beheld that they were white, and exceedingly fair and beautiful, like unto my people before they were slain.

16 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, beheld that the Gentiles who had gone forth out of captivity did humble themselves before the Lord; and the power of the Lord was with them.

17 And I beheld that their mother Gentiles were gathered together upon the waters, and upon the land also, to battle against them.

18 And I beheld that the power of God was with them, and also that the wrath of God was upon all those that were gathered together against them to battle.

19 And I, Nephi, beheld that the Gentiles that had gone out of captivity were delivered by the power of God out of the hands of all other nations.

A simple knowledge or read of the Declaration of Independence would have suffice as well, it is common knowledge the people of America came here to escape bondage and captivity, not just that of the King but the elite or nobility of Britain in their imagined superior need to control.

In 1776 the colonists of America could see the long arms of the nobility were not going to give up or let go, in fact it seemed to worsen and the people as a result issued their formal declaration of independence bringing on the revolutionary war. The people separating themselves from subjection to England was like England, (The Business) losing a large portion of their clientele. The beneficiaries of Britain were not about to let that go and their actions show this without doubt, it is certainly no secret.

Once the British were defeated those in power had to regroup and plan for the future as they did not consider intervention of the very God they proclaimed to obey. It would be another 36 years due to a lack of ideas of a cunning nature, to once again attempt by force to bring the people back into subjection to as they were historically accustomed to through 1500 years or so of practice. The Roman Empire still existed despite the views of many.

Once again in 1812, a remarkable event occurred wherein the Empire was again gathered to do battle against the people of the new free land and once again Great Britain was shown that God was still with the people. Today the event is known as “The Storm that saved Washington) rather than acknowledge he who has power over all storms… today it is downplayed in my humble opinion, to diminish the miracle it was in stopping the British once again. Hardly anything is said about the fact that the majority of the British fleet was wiped out. They do however mention that at the moment an incredible storm appeared, the British were engaged in burning the city of Washington, in which the fire was put out. What are the chances? With all the academic rhetoric fluff and buff that was written of the event all have failed to describe the true extraordinary nature of the event.

Nathan Rothschild, of the Bank of England, issued an ultimatum: “Either the application for the renewal of the charter is granted, or the United States will find itself involved in a most disastrous war.” Jackson and the American patriots did not believe the power of the international moneylenders could extend so far. “You are a den of thieves-vipers,” Jackson told them. “I intend to rout you out, and by the Eternal God, I will rout you out!” Nathan Rothschild issued orders: “Teach these impudent Americans a lesson. Bring them back to Colonial status.”

In nearly all wars, there is a third party instigator…

The British Government launched the War of 1812 against the United States. Rothschild's plan was to impoverish the United States through this war to such an extent that the legislators would have to seek financial aid... which, of course, would be forthcoming only in return for the renewal of the charter for the Bank of the United States. Thousands were killed, but what does that matter to Rothschild? He had achieved his objective; the U.S. Congress granted the renewal of the Charter in 1816.

50 years later the butt hurt Rothschild’s would kick up their heals again in an attempt to bring the colonist back into submission. During those 50 years many atrocities were committed by the new care takers of this land, crimes against the Native people, crimes against religious practice, deceit and deception by those in political power for personal gain, in short the new stewards of this blessed and yet cursed land had sufficiently fallen from serving the one true God.

It is nearly unknown by the inhabitants of this land as to the ancient old curse or blessing pronounced upon this land, depending upon the use of agency of the people. A majority of the native people knew this from ancient times but it is best said by those who first came to this land and is recorded in one of the Mormon Books, in this presumed true account, Ether 2:

10 For behold, this is a land which is choice above all other lands; wherefore he that doth possess it shall serve God or shall be swept off; for it is the everlasting decree of God. And it is not until the fulness of iniquity among the children of the land, that they are swept off.

11 And this cometh unto you, O ye Gentiles, that ye may know the decrees of God—that ye may repent, and not continue in your iniquities until the fulness come, that ye may not bring down the fulness of the wrath of God upon you as the inhabitants of the land have hitherto done.

12 Behold, this is a choice land, and whatsoever nation shall possess it shall be free from bondage, and from captivity, and from all other nations under heaven, if they will but serve the God of the land, who is Jesus Christ, who hath been manifested by the things which we have written.

In 1843, just 19 years before the Civil war conflict, a very interesting prophecy was given to Stephen A. Douglas by the leader Joseph Smith of the Mormons who is said to be a Prophet of God by the Mormon people. What I find strange about the prophecy is that what I would say is the most important part of the prophecy is ignored by most every one including the Mormon scholars and authors, yet the anti Mormons are very quick and anxious in pointing out the prophecy is false because the claim ignored part never happened! But here is where they could receive an education if they would… The prophecy recorded in the Journal of William Clayton on May 18th 1843 is as follows:

“Dined with Judge Stephen A. Douglas, who is presiding at court. After dinner Judge Douglas requested President Joseph to give him a history of the Missouri persecution, which he did in a very minute manner, for about three hours. He also gave a relation of his journey to Washington city, and his application in behalf of the Saints to Mr. Van Buren, the President of the United States, for redress and Mr. Van Buren's pusillanimous reply, "Gentlemen, your cause is just, but I can do nothing for you;" and the cold, unfeeling manner in which he was treated by most of the senators and representatives in relation to the subject, Clay saying, "You had better go to Oregon," and Calhoun shaking his head solemnly, saying, "It's a nice question—a critical question, but it will not do to agitate it."

The judge listened with the greatest attention and spoke warmly in depreciation of the conduct of Governor Boggs and the authorities of Missouri, who had taken part in the extermination, and said that any people that would do as the mobs of Missouri had done ought to be brought to judgment: they ought to be punished.

President Smith, in concluding his remarks, said that if the government, which received into its coffers the money of citizens for its public lands, while its officials are rolling in luxury at the expense of its public treasury, cannot protect such citizens in their lives and property, it is an old granny anyhow.

"And I prophesy in the name of the Lord God of Israel, unless the United States redress the wrongs committed upon the Saints in the state of Missouri and punish the crimes committed by her officers that in a few years the government will be utterly overthrown and wasted, and there will not be so much as a potsherd left, for their wickedness in permitting the murder of men, women and children, and the wholesale plunder and extermination of thousands of her citizens to go unpunished, thereby perpetrating a foul and corroding blot upon the fair fame of this great republic, the very thought of which would have caused the high-minded and patriotic framers of the Constitution of the United States to hide their faces with shame.

"Judge, you will aspire to the presidency of the United States; and if ever you turn your hand against me or the Latter-day Saints, you will feel the weight of the hand of Almighty upon you; and you will live to see and know that I have testified the truth to you; for the conversation of this day will stick to you through life.

He [Judge Douglas] appeared very friendly, and acknowledged the truth and propriety of President Smith's remarks.”

NEVER have I found where in any Mormon author has addressed this issue in their own defense, they only focus on Judge Douglas aspiring to the presidency… and clearly the answer as to why this is, they do not know… The very same reason the anti Mormons use it to discredit the Mormons, they do not know either… CLEARLY the most important part of this prophecy is UNLESS the United States redress the wrongs committed upon the Saints in the state of Missouri and punish the crimes committed by her officers that in a few years the government will be utterly overthrown and wasted

The United States NEVER redressed the wrong done unto the saints! If this is a true prophecy, I do not have to explain how profoundly earth shattering this is to learn but… It DID happen, and our Government, the Free Republic WAS utterly overthrown and wasted!... and here is where the anti Mormons eat crow…

The events that lead up to the Civil war of 1862 are many but remember, the Elite of Great Britain are proud people and don’t let go of things so easy especially where in their delusion of superiority has been ignored by us “impudent” people…

Now as I have said I am no political genius, but I know the motives, the objective of Great Britain is to bring the people into subjection to the Crown or the elite, by bondage and captivity, but war has not proven as effective as it is clear in this case whether they admit it or not… These peoples God has been with them in the past… Britain or should I say the elite, or powers that be, resort to an ancient old practice know as, Secret Combinations.

Now in an effort NOT to rehash over the details already written in previous articles or chapter of the book this article will likely appear… I will restate that in order to bring these people BACK into submission, by Captivity and bondage, certain things had to be set up in that the people voluntarily submit.

There is an ancient old rule which is all but stricken from history where in, when ever the powers that be intend to bring some act against the free people and into submission, they will always in one way or another tell them what they are going to do first. It is often in such a way that the people almost never see it or take it serious if they did, and they are lulled into carnal security often by way of benefits… IF the people do not heed the warnings and take no action to prevent it, this is considered as waving your agency in the matter by “Implied Consent” and the powers that be interpret this as a voluntary act and therefore they are justified having not infringed upon your God given agency which CANNOT be violated, not even by the God who granted it.

Although many other details exists, I am not of the political mind nor am I a master of Secret Combinations, however I do understand that the powers that be had to infiltrate and place in positions of power in our Republic in order to bring about each step leading to the overthrow of the Free Republic and in bringing the people BACK into voluntary Bondage and Captivity, financial and spiritual slavery.

Lineup of most suspected conspirators of the Assassination

of President Lincoln

Author of the 14th Amendment

John Bingham, Puppet, Author of the unholy document the 14th Amendment where in the people were told what the powers that be are going to do,  Lawyer, congressional politician, assistant Judge advocate in the Lincoln assassination trials, prosecutor in the trumped up impeachment trials of President Andrew Johnson, and friend of Salmon Chase, all very convenient.

Salmon Chase, friend of John Bingham, Puppet, Lawyer, politician, Chief Justice of the United States, Governor of Ohio, United States senate representing Ohio, Secretary of the Treasury of the United States, and being one of the “few” having served in all 3 branches of the Government? And he was such good friends with the creator of Chase National Bank, John Thompson, that John named his bank after Salmon Chase, but of course academics state that Salmon Chase had no connection to the bank…. Very convenient. Perhaps I will start a bank and name it after a friend…

Most suspect: Edwin Stanton, Puppet, Lawyer, politician, served as Secretary of War under President Lincoln, likely friend and associate of the Rothschild’s family, refused to accompany Lincoln to the theater the night of assassination, was personally responsible for the actions of the guard assigned to protect Lincoln and who was called away by Stanton at the time of the shooting, had many dealings with John Wilkes Booth, known for making statements such as “Well, all I have to say is, we’ve got to get rid of that baboon at the White House!,” Prime suspect in the missing pages of Booth’s journal, it was revealed that Booth had received a large amount of money from a New York based firm to which Stanton had connections, Stanton is primary suspect individual as the representative where in it is said that "A representative of the European Rothschilds called on President Lincoln and offered him money at 27% per cent interest, but was thrown out of his office."

Most Suspect: Rothschild power mongers, Puppet Masters

The Fed: The most gigantic trust

December 23, 1913, the U.S. Congress voted in the Federal Reserve Act, which took away from Congress the power to create money, and which handed over this power to the Federal Reserve Corporation. One of the rare Congressmen who had understood all the issue at stake in this Act,

Representative Charles A. Lindbergh Sr. (Rep-Minnesota), father of the famous aviator, said: “This Act establishes the most gigantic trust on earth. When the President (Wilson) signs this bill, the invisible government of the Monetary Power will be legalized... The worst legislative crime of the ages is perpetrated by this banking and currency bill.”

The education of the people

What allowed the bankers to finally obtain the complete monopoly of the control of credit in the United States? the ignorance among the population of the money question.

Lincoln's Secretary of Treasury, Salmon P. Chase, stated publicly, shortly after the passage of the National Banking Act, in 1863:

My agency in promoting the passage of the National Banking Act was the greatest financial mistake of my life. It has built up a monopoly which affects every interest in the country. It should be repealed, but before that can be accomplished, the people will be arrayed on one side, and the banks on the other, in a contest such as we have never seen before in this country.”

Do I owe Salmon an apology? I don’t think so…

Automobile manufacturer Henry Ford said:

If the people of the nation understood our banking and monetary system, I believe there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning.”

PRIME MOTIVE: To control the fiat system. As a result of this objective The Rothschild family and the elite had to formulate a plan where in every 20 years they did not have to fight for the extension or implementation of a new charter, you see people, they need your permission! It was time to set up a system of law under the façade of Government (The Fed) in which they essentially could give themselves permission with your voluntary blessings.

Among many smaller tasks, it was most important to establish “Law” under the illusion of Constitutional authority, (14th Amendment) which in its design was to have the appearance of remedy to satisfy all. The 14th amendment designed to follow the 13th amendment, keep in mind it was already against the laws of God and immoral to enslave anyone anywhere worldwide. However the slave issue kept the attention of the American people giving the illusion that this was the prime issue in the Civil war but it was not. The short of it was corporate take over or an overthrow of our Government, the Free Republic, and in 1871 supplanted with this Corporation conveniently named the UNITED STATES, a corporate appellation. As I have said before and is spelled out in greater detail in previous a previous article or chapter. The 14th amendment was not about expounding upon the redundant 13th amendment in an effort to further define rights of all men, it was about defining the rights of black men establishing a class of citizenship in which all would eventually fall under… it was about creating slavery, financial bondage and captivity, and those who seceded from the Union, those 7 congressmen who walked out of session at the presentment of the 14th amendment knew exactly what was happening.

Civil Rights which are not rights at all or Constitutionally Protected Rights? You decide, as you cannot have both…

I personally believe, however not being immune from error, John Bingham created the 14th amendment under the Act of collusion, the Rothschild coup and Salmon Chase assisted him in doing so as secretary of the Treasury of the United States which gave him insurmountable power and certain liberties dangerous to the American way. As Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton, with this same power and liberties was even more dangerous to the Republic. I believe Edwin Stanton was the direct go between, the director of affairs, the comptroller of this high treason.

I believe that things escalated throughout the conflict of the Civil war but given Lincolns plate was constantly full and after all, he had his men on the job, right? Many of the steps of the creation of the overthrow evaded his attention. I’m not certain he ever knew but apparently Edwin Stanton was in the perfect position to keep Lincoln in the dark. Stanton’s documented actions leading to and after the assassination of Lincoln are above questionable, in fact I am surprised he was never implicated or questioned, but at the same time because of the power he held and level of control over all investigating parties he managed to stay out of the path of accusation.

John Wilkes Booth: The hired assassin. Many of the academics would love to blame the Confederacy for the actions of booth in fact they have, leading the general public through their games of deception and mis information to believe the Confederacy was behind it. It is true Booth was employed with the Confederate underground and managed to a small degree to keep himself from being assassinated. However Booth was highly suspect as to playing both sides, a double agent and was kept under surveillance at times by the Confederate underground and never allowed to advance into more secretive ranks despite his often requests to do so.

The academic pens tell stories of Booths discontentment towards the abolitionists and it would seem evidence to support this is found in the Confederacy sources. It does become clearer as you read the wiki ditties that booth was a week minded individual and a simple target to indoctrinate, many of the things he spoke of or said to have spoke of, stinks of indoctrination. Booth was all about what he thought was going to pad his pocket best, he reminds me of the character from the 1999 movie The Mummy, played by Kevin J. O’Conner, Beni Gabor, especially at the moment the Mummy is coming at him and he resorts to all the different religious sayings and pendants in order to find one that might persuade the Mummy to back off. Beni throughout the movie was constantly looking for the winner in any given situation motivated by how it was going to benefit him. Booth was no different in this respect. One of Booths traits admired by the Confederacy was his ability to speak fluently as a true Grey Coat and at the snap of the finger speak as a fluent true Yankee.

Kidnapping Plot?

I do not believe there was ever a plot to kidnap Lincoln, and if there was, it was unknown to the Confederacy. The decision to kill Lincoln was pre determined by the powers that be, this web of deception was bound to come to someone’s attention and Lincoln would have been the first if he ever suspected anything. Lincoln would be the most powerful individual and most dangerous to all the effort put into this overthrow of power, he had to die along with others who could have implicated Stanton not to mention the Emperor of the Rothschild’s and their new clothes. The assassinations was to include others as well including Andrew Johnson, Johnson undoubtedly saw what was happening, at what point it hit him is unknown however, when his assassination was foiled, Stanton’s reaction and actions were in my mind very condemning. Further condemning Stanton was the Impeachment brought against Johnson and the circumstances leading up to it.

True Purpose of the Tenure ACT

The way I see it, the Tenure ACT of 1867 was implemented in order to keep key controlled people in office in order to keep control of the overthrow process, but had Johnson been assassinated as planned, I have my doubts the Tenure ACT would have ever been written, why was it expedient in 1867? Johnson who I believe knew more about Stanton that most think, was accused of violating this ACT, yet even a casual reading one can see this is not the case, but no matter, the attempt to remove Johnson failed. Regardless of what history has written I am certain Stanton and his puppet master were responsible for the creation of the Tenure ACT. If Johnson had been assassinated, the intended and carefully groomed or easily controlled Lafayette Sabine Foster would have been acting president of the United States.

The Assassination from the Confederacy Perspective:

The source material used for the following let me say, I find as more plausible and credible than that of WIKI or what history has established, According to the testimony given in The Black Book, I do not need to explain as I have in other articles or previous chapters as to why I would place such firm stock in the Black Book. Being only 7 or so pages I am reproducing the contents  regarding Booth here.

From the Black Book: Book Page 132-141

The Odyssey of John Wilkes Booth

If John Wilkes Booth hadn't shot President Abe Lincoln at 10:15 p.m., Good Friday, April 14, 1865, in Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C., today's encyclopedias may have accorded him a few brief lines or none at all.

Booth was born in 1838 in Maryland, the son of Junius Brutus Booth, an actor, who was born in London in 1796. John's brother, Edwin Thomas Booth, was a well-known Shakespearian actor who died in 1893. Some historians claim John Wilkes Booth "inherited" insanity from his father, Junius.

One of America's top writers, Jim Bishop, did a remarkable job of researching Booth's activities leading up to the assassination in his book,

THE DAY LINCOLN WAS SHOT.

He accurately portrayed Booth's treachery and fanaticism and the incompetence of his accomplices. But Bishop failed to report what the Confederates thought of one of their top spies, probably because the records weren't

Page 133

available to him. Bishop related the confusion following the shooting and how Booth made his escape from Washington via the Navy Yard Bridge and wrote, "There were stories which persisted for years it wasn't Booth who was killed."

The official U.S. Government version is that Col. E. J. Conger and 28 enlisted men cornered Booth in a barn near Bowling Green, Virginia, at 2 a.m., April 26, 1865. After the barn was set afire, Sgt. Boston Carbett shot Booth in the back of the head and he died, but not until a dramatic dialog took place. That wrote finis to the 27-year-old Booth. Or did it?

What about Confederate records? The Knights of the Golden Circle, the top Confederate underground organization headed by another "dead man," Col. Jesse Woodson James, had another version.

Prior to the Civil War, J. Wilkes Booth, as he liked to sign his name, had attended a military school, but had been bounced because he was too impetuous. When the war broke, Booth volunteered for the Confederate Army, but an officer was impressed with his intelligence and ability to interchangeably "talk like a Yankee and a Southerner." It was decided Booth could do more than shoot a gun.

After a short training course, Booth was soon moving back and forth through Union and Confederate lines with valuable military information for the South. At times, he used the name John Botha, the last name of a Russian-Jewish ancestor who settled in England. Posing as a drummer (salesman), he sold materiel of war to both sides.

While he was a competent enough spy, Booth had some traits which bothered his superiors. He asked too many questions about Confederate plans, and he enjoyed gathering gossip about Rebel generals. At times, the Confederates had Booth under surveillance, believing he could be a double agent. Despite their suspicions, Booth continued to deliver damaging information on Union moves, and he did it in record time.

In spite of his service, Booth was never able to advance

Page 134

above The Knights of the White Camellias, the third-ranked Confederate secret organization. He brought ill-conceived schemes to kill President Lincoln, Gen. U.S. Grant and other high-ranking Union officers, to his superiors. Put down as a "loner," Booth boasted of personal friends who would help him commit the acts. Confederates doubted his leadership, and some of his friends were checked out and denied membership in any of the Southern secret organizations.

Following President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, J. Wilkes Booth went into a deep mental depression, punctuated at times by violent outbursts. He told his superiors, "Lincoln has freed the Negroes so the Negroes can make slaves of Southern white men and women! For this, he shall die!"

The final year of the Civil War when things were going badly for the South, Booth did less spying and more plotting on his own. He reported to his Confederate superiors, "A representative of the European Rothschilds called on President Lincoln and offered him money at 27% per cent interest, but was thrown out of his office."

A few years later, while gathered in the Confederate Underground Capital in Nashville, Tenn., The Knights of the Golden Circle heard a report from one of Booth's superiors in which he alleged the Rothschilds incident might have been the turning point in the spy's frustration. "Gentlemen," he said, "I personally think that John Wilkes Booth went to work for the Rothschilds and assassinated Mr. Lincoln in their behalf."

Most Southerners were shocked by the senseless assassination of President Lincoln. The war was over for all practical purposes, and their cause was lost. The Knights of the Golden Circle moved quickly to get Wilkes Booth to safety - he knew too much. Near a village in Maryland, the haggard assassin, his leg broken, was hidden in a wagon-load of chicken coops, the first leg of his journey to the Free State of Van Zandt, Texas.

William S. (Wild Bill) Lincoln, a distant cousin of the President, reported in a sworn statement: "Our branch of  Page 135

the Lincoln family was never satisfied with what really happened to Booth, and I spent fourteen years of my life running down the true story. Strangely enough, I learned it from Jesse W. James, head of the Confederate underground. I was present at Booth's real death.

"Jesse told me that Union troops and federal detectives traced Booth to an old barn on the Garrett farm in the hills near Bowling Green, Virginia. In their hysteria, they set the barn afire and then shot and killed a crippled Union veteran whose only crime was being drunk at 2 o'clock in the morning.

"Colonel James also told me the sad fact was that some mighty innocent people were made to suffer and even hung and imprisoned because of their association with Booth. He said that the Confederate underground had no love for Booth - he had shot the President after it was too late. However, the organization protected him and put the lazy bastard on a $3,600 a year pension as long as he behaved himself and caused them no trouble; but Booth couldn't stand fetters." Because of strict Confederate underground surveillance, Booth pulled up stakes and moved to Glen Rose, Texas, where he operated a distillery. He managed to get into difficulty with Federal authorities over a special U.S. permit and tax and sent his lawyer to the Federal District Court in Paris, Texas. Deserting his distillery, Booth moved north to Granbury, Hood County, Texas, where he built the city's first stone business building at the southwest corner of Courthouse Square, now used as a restaurant.

He also returned to the stage, a direct violation of his agreement with the underground. Texas Rangers and lawmen, mostly former Confederate soldiers, filed reports with The Knights of the Golden Circle telling about the strange behavior of John Wilkes Booth, alias James St. George. The actor-assassin was drinking heavily, bragging about being the man who shot Lincoln, and boasting about his knowledge of Confederate underground secrets.

The Golden Circle held a meeting and sentiment was

Page 136

strong for executing Booth, but Jesse W. James, who by this time was building an empire in the West, suggested, "I kind of agree with you about shutting his big mouth for good, but let's let him make a tour of theaters in the West. We'll send along two agents to ride herd on him."

Meanwhile, Wild Bill Lincoln, who was working as an acrobat, circus clown, lumberjack, cowhand and teamster, was hot on the trail of Booth or St. George. In the early 1890s he roomed for while with Charles Booth, who was a nephew of the man he sought. "Charlie told me" Lincoln recalled, "that he had visited his uncle in Texas and Booth had hired a lawyer to write a book about his secret life and how and why he shot President Lincoln. I eventually got hold of the book, and in it Booth tried to vindicate himself for the awful deed."

One night in the 1890s, Wild Bill Lincoln appeared on the same stage with John Wilkes Booth in Colorado City (now Colorado Springs), Colorado. "I talked to him," Lincoln recalled, "but I didn't know he was my man. He was using the name of Edwin Booth, his brother."

Then one night in 1902 or early 1903, Wild Bill was sitting in Colonel Jim McDaniels' (Jesse James) hotel room in Guthrie, Oklahoma, when a book was tossed his way. McDaniels lit a long cigar and said, "Believe it or not, Wild Bill, that book was written by one of your men in the White Camellias, old John Wilkes Booth, alias Edwin Booth, alias James St. George."

"Can I take it and read it, Colonel?"

"That's why I gave it to you. Read it and then burn it, you hear? The Knights of the Golden Circle bought up most of his press run, but there's a lot of dynamite in the book. We're still preparing for the Second Civil War and Booth is busy revealing a lot of our secrets. He knows more than any of us ever thought." In a sworn statement at Zephyrhills, Florida, on October 1, 1950, William S. (Wild Bill) Lincoln said, "While trying for years on my own to run down the John Wilkes Booth mys-

Page 137

tery, I landed right in the middle of the Jesse Woodson James mystery without half trying."

In the spring of 1903, Bill was working for the Colonel in Colorado when he received a telegram in Confederate code, urging him to "get to Guthrie, Oklahoma, as fast as you can." "Jim McDaniels" was waiting for him in the bar, and Wild Bill had a drink with him.

"Listen carefully, Wild Bill," McDaniel said, "because we're moving to Enid at dawn. Don't look now, but those seven fellows down at the end of the bar are Knights of the Golden Circle agents. The end is coming for that scoundrel, John Wilkes Booth. Knowing how you feel about him, I thought you'd want to be in on the kill."

Wild Bill gulped, "Are you serious, Colonel?"

"Never more serious in my life, son. I've spared that rascal's life many times. The Golden Circle just had a meeting down in Texas, and we voted to execute Booth. He was in Texas, too, but an hour after the meeting he flies the coop. He either has a pipeline into our Inner Circle or he's just plain mystic - I don't know which. Three days ago, our agents located him in Anadarko, but then he headed north."

"So you think he's in Enid then?" Wild Bill asked.

"We know he's registered at the Grand Avenue Hotel in Enid tonight under the name of James St. George. I've got two agents up there, and he won't go any farther because I've sent word that I, as head of the Golden Circle, will deal with him."

"Is he armed?" Wild Bill asked.

"Who in hell cares if that bum is or not? I'll take care of him."

"How old a man is Booth?"

The older man tugged at his beard thoughtfully. "Well, I'm 59, and I seem to recall Booth is six years older so that would put him at 65. The damn fool hasn't drawn a sober breath practically since the night he shot President Lincoln thirty-eight years ago. How old are you, Wild Bill?"

"Just 30, sir."

"Well, get some sleep. We want to leave early so we can make Enid at a decent hour tomorrow night."

A half block from the Grand Avenue Hotel that night a young Indian boy was selling lemons from a small basket. The Colonel stopped and said to Wild Bill, "Have this kid make you about a quart of lemonade, pronto, while I duck into this drug store."

Four Golden Circle agents sat in the lobby while the other three joined the two agents already surrounding the hotel - just in case Booth made a run for it.

"Mr. St. George expects us," the Colonel told the desk clerk and he started up the steps, followed closely by Wild Bill with a jar of lemon juice.

The door was unlocked and the two men could see the shape of a man lying on the bed. The Colonel lighted the gas light and Booth twisted in his bed. Beside the bed were three empty whisky bottles.

"Just wanta drink. Jus' wanta..." the man muttered. Then he opened his eyes. Startled, he said, "Colonel, you've come to kill me!"

"Take it easy, Mr. St. George," Jesse said, moving a chair close to the bed and sitting down.

"You are Jesse James and the world should know!" Booth charged, suddenly stone sober.

"Impossible, Mr. St. George, because Jesse James was killed more than twenty years ago. Jesse James is legally dead."

Booth sat up, alarmed. "Stop playing cat and mouse with me, damn you, Jesse James!"

"I could call you John Wilkes Booth, Mr. St. George, but the whole world knows Booth is dead," Jesse said gently.

"You know damn well that I am John Wilkes Booth!" Booth practically bellowed. Perspiration poured from the actor's face.

For a moment Jesse stared at the shell of a man.

"I need a drink!" Booth commanded.

"Being a hot night, Mr. Booth, we brought you something cool to drink. Now, Wild Bill, you talk to Mr. Booth while I fix up his drink."

Jesse went over to the wash stand with the jar of lemonade. Hastily, he pulled two bottles from his pocket and poured pure arsenic into the jar. Then he stirred the mixture with a table fork. He poured the loaded lemonade into a glass.

Approaching the bed, Jesse said, "Now, Mr. Booth, I think you've had enough alcohol for tonight. This lemonade will really fix you up. I personally guarantee it."

Booth balked. "A goddamn ladies' drink. I won't do it!"

"Come on now, Mr. Booth. Try just a swallow or two."

The actor swallowed half a glass and said, "Not a bad drink at that." He turned to Wild Bill and asked, "Do we know each other? Your face looks familiar.

" Wild Bill coughed. "Yes, Mr. Booth, some years back we were on the same stage in Colorado City."

"How interesting. Did I give a good performance?" He drained his glass and Jesse filled it up again.

"You were superb, Mr. Booth," Wild Bill assured him.

"What was the name of the play, do you remember?" the actor asked.

"It was called Our American Cousin,, I believe, sir." Booth gulped the last of the lemonade. He tore at his collar. "Open another window in here, damn it, I can't breathe."

Then he stood up and addressed Wild Bill. "What did you say your name was?"

"Lincoln, Mr. Booth. You shot a cousin of mine, Abraham Lincoln!"

"Lincoln... Lincoln..." Booth gasped, went into almost a stage fall, but hit the floor with a thud.

Jesse James bent over and felt his heart. "Deader than a mackerel," he said. "Wild Bill, stay here. I'm sending up the four agents in the lobby to go through Booth's luggage. I'll be back in a few minutes."

While his agents searched Booth's suitcase and trunk, the Colonel went up to the desk clerk. He slid two $20 gold pieces under his hand. "Mr. St. George isn't feeling too well tonight. I'd suggest you look in on him in the morning. If he isn't feeling better, call a doctor. He requested that we take his trunk with us tonight because we're headed for his brother's place in Kansas City."

"Sure enough," said the clerk, pocketing the gold pieces. "If you ask me, old St. George is just plain drunk."

"You might have a point at that, son," Jesse said, going back up the stairs.

The six men were amazed at the records Booth had kept through the years. After they had finished sorting it, Jesse said, "You know, men, I'm just glad Booth didn't put all this in that crazy book his lawyer wrote - he could have put a noose around all of our necks!"

Colonel James then directed his men to plant just enough evidence around the room so that the U.S. Marshals could identify the dead man as John Wilkes Booth. Then they took the trunk and departed, nodding cordially to the desk clerk on the way out.

The men camped a few miles out of Enid and while dinner cooked, Jesse, mused, "It's kind of funny but in 399 BC, Socrates' enemies forced him to drink a fatal dose of hemlock because he knew too much. And tonight, 2,302 years later, Booth's friends forced him to drink a fatal dose of arsenic because he talked too much."

"Well, Colonel," Wild Bill said, stirring the fried potatoes, "if I live to be a hundred, I won't forget tonight!"

Late that afternoon from Guthrie, Jesse had an agent send a telegram to the U.S. Marshal's office telling them John Wilkes Booth was dead and where his body could be found.

Three days later, Jesse, accompanied by Wild Bill and two agents, went back to Enid and Jesse slipped two $20 gold pieces under the hand of the desk clerk.

The clerk said, "Whole bunch of lawmen were here yesterday morning up there in Mr. St. George's room, but

Page 141

his body is still there in the bed. It's starting to turn black-like and is tough as leather."

"Don't worry, son," Jesse said, "we're relatives and we've come to claim his body."

Up in the room, Jesse muttered, "The Union War Department once offered $100,000 reward for Booth, dead or alive. Now we laid Booth right in the Yankee laps and they don't want him!"

Carting the body of Booth back to Guthrie, Jesse looked up a doctor friend and asked him for a diagnosis. "It would appear that this man swallowed so much poison, probably arsenic, that he is permanently preserved. He's like a damn Egyptian mummy!"

Through a friendly town marshal, Jesse learned that the federal men had checked out John Wilkes Booth's body and papers in Enid and reported some transient posing as Booth had committed suicide. The report listed the dead man's name as James St. George.

Wild Bill wrote years later, "Was the Booth case still too hot to touch in 1903? I'm sure Dr. Samuel Mudd along with others would have been vindicated, and it would have exposed the earlier ill-conceived, hysterical investigation, but the U.S. Marshals just turned their backs on the case. Maybe the U.S. government by 1903 had uncovered the real facts in the Booth case and was too ashamed to admit the big blunders made by the government in 1865."

Under Jesse James' direction, the leathery, mummified body of John Wilkes Booth was put in a special coffin and several of his men took it on an exhibition tour all over the United States.

Jesse James III reports the Booth body was owned by a Glencoe, Minnesota, jeweler named Jay Gould, a relative of the financier, who had it stored. "This was in 1955 and I believe Gould has passed away. What happened to the body? Who knows? Perhaps John Wilkes Booth, hated by both the North and the South, is destined to lie forever unburied and unwanted."
