I regret to inform my Treasure hunting friends and those who knew and loved him, Chad Adams, is no longer with us...
Thank You Chad! for all you so selflessly did for my family....
Rest in Peace my friend!
Well another year has almost gone by and as it would
seem my efforts of bringing forth knowledge of Antonio de Espejo and his
adventures into the
To brush up on the story of Antonio please re-read…
In the last two years focus has been upon finding points upon the Espejo Map in order to validate its authenticity, this was accomplished quite smoothly, validation is now a moot point, however finding the mine sites, amour caches or Vaults would be the ultimate, and I am going to keep moving in that direction as circumstances allow.
The first mine validated was in some ways accidental as the finder did not know of the Espejo map when he found that mine, it wasn’t until years later that it was realized what it was. Many portions of the old trails has been validated as well especially last year. The second mine was to me the most exciting, after months and years of studying the map and fine tuning my understanding of what drainages were intended, one mine location caught my attention and using all I could to pin point it’s location once I was certain, I called one of my best colleagues and he without haste went to visit the site which wasn’t exactly easy to get to, and sure enough he found it! Much has occurred since in the effort to open a mine that likely hasn’t seen the light of day in near 450 years.
Yesterday was a big day for me. After discovery of the second mine, my focus changed to another area of a 3rd mine, careful consideration and planning was made and early last week I and Michael made our way into the area, I having some limitations, Michael did all the work. The day ended with us not being to much wiser and plans made to return just a few days later were made. We arrived at the site yesterday morning and planned our course for the day. A better path chosen made it much easier for me to get closer in however again Michael did most of the searching but with the benefit of the old trail present. Standing way above the search area and tracking Michaels moves, I spotted a small clearing and flat spot below, this I would use as a point in order to see his positioning. The more I looked at it the more I could see that it was likely what we came to find. After seeing it up close and much investigation I am for the most part certain it is what we think it is… keep in mind after 450 years, an old mine dump is well on its way to merging back in with mother nature and can in some ways be difficult to see even if you are standing on it, further investigation is in the works.
I wish I had some pictures for you, but over growth made it pointless, I’ll see what I can do next trip.
Who knows, I may even have
time to find a 4th location this year… we’ll see… maybe one of the
Vaults. I hate the cold and the leaves are beginning to change… Michael just
couldn’t get enough of the beautiful landscapes… I will never doubt the off-road
abilities of the Lexus. ;-)

Several times have I written in my articles about “a friend” who has shared information with me… some of you know well and good who it is… but others don’t really need to know do they?
a clip from the Espiritu Santo Minas Map of 1588

Dan,
In the years after I returned from my stint
in the Army I ventured out into the
Richard Riddley was a man of integrity and
honesty. He would never tell just anyone something to appease them. He used to
play tricks on Rhoades all the time and he and I would laugh when Rhoades would
take the bait. I never told Rhoades of the trickery because to Richard it was
an honorable thing to do to you enemies. Richard never liked Rhoades but
tolerated him because Rhoades was friends with his youngest son Hoby. He
treated me like a son.
Bishop Arrowchis was the same. He took more
of a liking to Rhoades than Riddley did. Richard and Bishop were cousins and
rode as Ute Rangers back in the 40's and 50's. They knew were many mines,
treasures and battles took place.
Paul Cornpeach was of the same cut. I first
met him while prospecting Rock Creek back in 1969 when he came upon me near
Miners Gulch. We met several times after that.
Neil Wyaskit was another one that taught me
much. I met him back in 1965 and rode with him in the
Tabiune was another. He took me to smelters
up Dry Gulch now called lime Kiln Springs. The were still pretty much intact
then. He told me how the Spaniards built them and why. A few miles upstream
were two mines that they gold good gold from. At that time water ran down the
wash were the smelters are, but today it is dry.
I still have friends out there but most
have gone the way of the spirit. I am blood brothers with some and one not of
the Utes but of the Apache. I have kept my word with them for years by not
showing or telling anyone what I have seen and what I've been told. I laugh at
those who THINK they know when I know full well they don't! But I keep my mouth
shut and let them rave on making fools of themselves. Richard and Bishop taught
me how to read Spanish signs and symbols. Gale Rhoades taught me as well. The
Indians were taught by their fathers who learned from the Spaniards themselves.
This
sets the stage of two of the many mines I've either been shown or told about.
These two stories will give you something to look for. It won't be easy but I
can give you some clues to help you. I've looked for one but not the other.
Excerpt from Bishop: "Someone - when
surveying the Indian boundary line of the west side of the _______ River found
a small opening or hole and inside was found a lot of gold bullion &
artifacts stacked up. This was found by Indians and then left as was found. The
cave or hole is just off the line...on
I
hiked that fence line several times and then one day as I was walking the fence
line and keeping my head down with eyes fixed so as to notice anything out of
the ordinary an Indian came up on me from the thick trees before I even heard
him. He was on horseback too. He stopped and asked "What are doing?"
I said, "Looking for gold." He looked at me for a moment they added
"You are too far down, you need to go higher up" "Why" I
asked. "You are a friend of the Arrowchis'
so I tell you, you are too far down, go up." I said, thank you and asked his name. He said
it didn't matter and then wished me luck. I did go further up but darkness over
took me so I abandoned that venture. Time, money and other things got in my way
so I never did go back.

The Indian Fence line and where I think the hole might be. I was 1/4 mile short of the ridge.
Riddley
told me about a mine that was once worked by Aaron Daniels and maybe Caleb
Rhoades however he did not know about the later.
He
said that when he was a boy the Daniels' sons and grandsons used to look for
the Lost Rhoades Mine but he said "They were way off.". He took me to a place up in ______ Creek not from
the _______. There in a hillside he pointed and said "Look there, this is
a old Spanish mine that Daniels worked and got much gold out of, however I
think it might be behind us because some old Indians say he drew the map like
Indians do, always in reverse."
I asked him if he was sure about this.
He said, "I know what came out of the mine and I know what is still in the
mine because of Daniels telling his wife and her people know. I don't know if
the mine is there or behind us."
Dan,
these two sites should produce good gold for you. I leave these in your hands.
I hope you can benefit by them. I know it will be a burden to go after these
but if you do and spend the time needed you'll find them.

Two
possible sites for the Daniels' Mine dubbed #3 on his map.
It has
only been recently that I discovered that the mines in question are located on
the Espiritu Santo Minas Map of 1588 If we can find them, we will have two more
locations found on the previous mentioned map, aka Antonio De Espejo Map.
In January of 2017, a friend of mine who has since passed away sent me an email asking me if I would be interested in investigating a story… as usual I accepted… the following is the short story of what he sent me…
A friend of mine dropped by my home years ago with one of his sons and his father-in-law. They called him "Bink" and that's all I ever knew him by. Anyway, old Bink grew up in ________ and his family had sheep up on the mountain to the east. I would imagine they were up _____ Creek and _____Creek as well.
Anyway,
when Bink was a teenager he found some of the sheep hanging out on
the face of the hill between ______ and ______ creeks so he went up to get them to move off the face and into the canyon where he could gather them up easier. While up on that face he noticed a sort of flatten off area but still on the slope. He started nosing around and found a white rock about the size of a coffee table leaning against the hill side. It looked odd he said! He decided to check it out and found it had been fashioned to that size. He pried it away from the hill side to reveal a small hole in the mountain.
Some
time later he came back up there to excavate the hole and after he had made
entrance he was surprised at what he found. There he found Aztec warriors
sitting up in a circle fully clothed and several horses with them. They were in
surprisingly good condition. Bink told us that he covered the cave and left it.
He was afraid of what might happen if he told about what he had found because
the family might lose their grazing rights on the mountain. I sent two guys up
there to investigate it for me but they didn't find anything. Of course they
are not exactly experts in the field.

In February of 2017, this same friend called me up and told me to check my email. Why I asked, He said he had another story for me to check out should I get into the area. In these days, his health was beginning to decline and as time went by, searching his files, he would come across another lead and send it to me, he once told me that it has become apparent that there is no way he is going to be able to follow up on many stories he had received over the years and so he would send them to me hoping that someday I might be able to do what he could no longer do. I have intentionally left his name out in an effort to spare his surviving family, any harassment yet at the same time I want to give credit where credit is due…
I did as he asked and checked my email and in it was
the following letter written to him, I have also left the individuals name out
who wrote the letter, written I believe in the 1990’s.
Dear Mr. …..
The reason
for writing to you is to tell you of a story that my grandfather told to me
before he died in 1948. He, along with two friends who happened to be
The day wore on and soon the sun began to sink low in the western sky. Grandfather and his friends decided to make camp near a cliff where water and grass was plenty for their horses. After camp had been set up and the evening meal ate they sat around the fire talking about the days events. Jake <last name>, one of the Indians began telling a story that perked up my grandfather's ears. Grandfather said that Jake told him that the Spanish were in this area looking for slaves at one time. And that Jake's own father had been a slave under the hands of the Spanish. one of the times the Spanish were hunting slaves they came to the area north and east of present day <city named> where a group of Indians were camped. When the Indians saw the Spaniards they beat it for cover.
Jake's father and his older brother ran as fast as they could for a low cliff over hang to hide. Once under the over hang they looked for more concealment. Digging in the back of the over hang the brother accidentally knocked some loose rock out of what was a cave of sorts. Moving quickly both boys opened up the entrance so they could get inside. Once inside they covered the hole up leaving enough so they could look out but anyone looking at the spot could not tell what was there.
Once the Spaniards had rounded up all the slaves they needed, which was just about everyone in the village they headed south. The two boys watched in horror as their family was whipped and beaten as they were herded to their new homes in Navajo land. It was when the two boys opened up the hole to get out that they noticed that the cave was some how strange and inviting. They made the entrance large enough to see that there were a set of rock steps going down inside. They went back to their camp where they gathered enough material to make a fire and returned and made up some torches. Down inside they made a fantastic discovery. There was a large room about fifty feet from the bottom of the rock stairs. And in this room was 58 Indians, all in their finery.
They were not any kind of Indian that either boy had ever seen, but they had the look of Indians, and they were perfectly mummified. They were very tall and large men. And they had weapons of iron, swords and bows of a strange design. They also had strange necklaces on with beautiful rocks attached. There were several large baskets with all sorts of corn and peas in them. There was two large wooden boxes with very strange designs on them and they had two long poles on each side of the boxes suggesting that it took several men to lift these boxes. One of the boys opened one of the boxes, and inside found gold and silver that looked like coins of some sort. The boys thought that they were in the tomb of a god and that they had better leave it like they had found it. So they went to the entrance and reburied it better than they had found it. They never returned.
Grandfather asked Jake if he had ever been to that place. Jake said that he had, and that his father and his brother had taken an oath not to open it up again. The brother died long before Jake's grandfather, and as far as he knew he never told anyone about the place. Jake told grandfather that he would like to show someone the place before he died just in case the time had come to open it up. The other Indian was not to be involved in this, and I don't know much about that because grandfather never told me.
He was shown this place and then told me about it. My problem is that I never found anyone I could trust to tell this story to. I also don't know that country at all and couldn't find anything if I had a map with an "X" on it next to a 7-11 store.
I was wondering if you would be interested in pursuing something like this, and if so would you meet with me so that I can see if this would be the thing to do? I am getting on in years and have no children of my own and not a soul to share this with.
Please let me
know as soon as possible.
Thank you
very much
Pat ….
There are many stories regarding these strange Indians who were somewhat different than what was here a couple hundred years ago, and some day I’d like to write more about them, but for now, I cannot…

Over the many years the projects that have come and gone are many…. Several of them seem to hit a dead end only to re-surface in the future due to new enlightenment or new information… Following is one of those projects that only took me 15 plus years to look at it with a different perspective… with this, I will draw your attention to the almost well known and published map of Perdro Nunez of 1771 in his expedition into the west end of the Uinta Mountains. Near 250 years ago and 5 years prior to Father Escalante.
Several years before the map became public we ventured
into the areas of the map searching for any sign of authenticity… some success
was made in fact enough to know the map is indeed authentic however the real
evidence came just a few years later when a friend whom I will refer to as John sent me the following photo…
When I saw the photo I knew it was authentic with out doubt in fact he was sending it to me to get my take on it. This would now be the 3rd authentic aspen tree carving I had seen. This tree using an increment borer, dated 15 years ago at 289 years old. I called John immediately and asked if he could take me to the tree… “of course” he replied… Little did I know…
I didn’t know from the picture but it also has a map carved
below the expedition symbol. To give you a better perspective see the following
image…
And closing the gap due to the age of the tree and
expanding… see the next image…
The presumed drainage on the map matches near
perfectly the drainage down the hill below the tree. Upon arriving at the tree
any doubts remaining disappeared, but I still had to sample the tree to at
least get its age. It is not possible to date the carving of an
At this exact moment, I can show you an Aspen that is miraculously
still holding on and it is just over 500 years old dated by a professional in
the field, twice yet, as he did not believe the first results so he did it
again.
Not the EC, Look Under it...
This tree is over 500 years old, wrapping my arms
around it didn’t quite make half the circumference. Back to the story….
After seeing the tree first hand and core sampling it,
we determined the direction of the now non existing trail and about 50 yards
further found another tree about the same size as the first, which had a double
box carved into it… (No Picture Available) But it looks just like the image in
the following clip from the Nunez Map…
Now understand the author of the Nunez map was certainly no cartographer, however he was pretty good at details barring perspective. Because of my perspective at first seeing the map, In my mind, I was about 6 miles to far west, it wasn’t until I seen the second tree that the map came back into my head and I knew my mistake…
However this map alone is challenging, but tree
carvings 20 years ago and what to do was another issue… after leaving the
second tree traveling in the direction making most sense we entered another
grove of trees and found a heart carved on one tree and a turtle on another, no
tail, no legs… see following images…
Not far away leaving the site, we also found a tree marked with one league. At the time or not long after this venture we were in the middle of trying to work out the details of the Rule of Marteloio… thinking it must be present at all sites but this is incorrect… but as of a few days ago, perspective has again come into play and this former brick wall no longer exists… I think I get it now and it was as simple as the carvings on the tree…. Above the turtles head is a nice carved fancy L… and for those who don’t know… this is a sure implication of “50”… but 50 what? What direction? You guessed it, in the direction of the turtles head… There is no rule of Marteloio at this site as I was previously so determined for there to be… Enough said about that… According to the map on the tree, and comparing to USGS map, the dot on the map presuming to represent a mine, and from the one league tree, would be… yup… one league away and in the direction of the top of the league symbol. I can’t wait to get back there… fortunately plans are in the works. Metal Detector, Deep seeker and Magnetometer.
As far as I know, there are only 5 Aspens still living that I know are authentic Spanish carved...
After so many years of putting up with this BS.....
I’m going to do something a
little different today as a result of accusations against me of plagiarism made just a few
days ago, by two individuals in the treasure hunting game.
I am going to start with Gary Holt…
Mr. Holt, you have stated/asked why my new book has “YOUR” research papers in it and then you have named the research papers as the “Kimball report” and the “Bird Report”….
First and foremost Mr. Holt, they are not yours… on
several levels…. The articles which you apparently claim are your own intellectual
property were first published from 1898 to 1908 by the Salt Lake Herald, Morgan
County News and the Salt Lake Mining Review so should we now ask you the same
question? You have also implied that I learned of this information “From your
web site of which I have never seen until just a few days ago…. Ps, thanks for
the laugh… You claim you found this information and placed it on your web site
in 2019 supposing you were the first, had you taken the time and not been so
pompous, you would find the same articles posted on my blog site in 2015, FOUR YEARS prior to you even knowing they existed... and
if you have the energy you will also find them on the Treasures of Utah forum
as far back as 2010 when they were first shared with me by Darrel Sprecher who
is one of the best researchers I know and who I credit as finding them… should
we now accuse you of plagiarism? NO
Anyone with merit is welcome to see the properties of
my files and you will see the files were first acquired in October of 2012,
along with many other files
Just a few of the like articles Darrel
and I have shared over the years
Oh... and By the way Mr. Holt, this "NEW" Book as you have called it, The Treasures of Utah WITH The Kimball Article in it.... was published in 2013 SIX YEARS befor you put it on your web site... published by Pioneer Press Santaquin Utah Talk to Kevin Kraut and tell him about your conspiracy... oops..
Now... Mr. Lewis… One year ago you approached me in
Do you even know what you did to me? I lost my Farm, my home, my retirement, my income and Jack lost the same other than his home, all of this because I believed you when you came to me worried about retiring from Hill Field and not having enough to pay your bills… and gave you a position in our company of which you and your co conspirator took full advantage… shall I elaborate further?
This might be a good time to remind you, the statute of limitation on FRAUD is seven years AFTER DISCOVERY and to this day the details are still just a little fuzzy but I know exactly where the indisputable evidence of your actions are… I can’t count the times I have said to myself, “I should have put him in prison where he belongs”… in parting at Altamont I asked you the very same question I had asked you so many years ago the last time I saw you … “what did I ever do to you other than be your friend”… your response was exactly the same, “You haven’t done anything to me”… and yet, over these years I hear rumors of all the ridiculous things I supposedly did to you... screwed you out of a 100,000 dollar airplane deal... left you with a 100,000 tax debt, sold a trailer to another party after promising it to you... and my favorite, when you insisted on paying for the Pizza! shall we elaborate? all false stories just like your claims of being decent of the Prussian Emperor and claims of falsehoods just like you did to June Balaich for so many years...
May I remind you of the same things I told Gary, the photos I use in my assessment of YOUR book, because you are the one who fed Boren with the false imagined information to write the book, the photos I used were GIVEN to me by you… the very same images in which you stole from the Hathenbruck Brothers who lived in Cedar city, would you like me to present the proof? should we elaborate on the details of this event and the other items stolen that they never knew about? Should we mention the $10,000 Bank Note you showed me, and how about the Red Journal? I’m sure the Hathenbruck brothers would like to know about these things… As far as other photos go, you and I after several expeditions in which YOU were invited to tag along, took the very same pictures as we both had the same cameras because I bought you that camera in behalf of the Treasures of Utah as a token of appreciation apparently for false stories... For anyone wanting to know, the differences in my photos and Randy’s during this time, is that his have a time date stamp in the bottom right, Mine do not…. But I don’t mind others using them when credit is given. You might have told Mick Norton this when you without my permission burn him a DVD copy of over thousands of photos and gave it to him.
SEE ASSESMENT of the book Utah Gold Rush (If any of the readers find anything within the Assessment of which you have proof to the contrary, please contact me as I have no problem correcting any error made.
I remember one of my first expeditions with Steve Shaffer where in I was invited along, I asked him if I could bring you along as well, reluctantly he agreed… I thought at the time I was going with two experts of the Treasure Hunting… on our way up to Hoyt, We stopped at a small grove of trees where Steve said were some Spanish carvings on trees, each of us were driving our own trucks that day… each of us grabbed our cameras … when we entered the trees, it was so obvious the trees had been recently carved and only a few years old… but YOU went nuts, grabbing your camera out of its case and proceeded snapping pictures like a kid in a candy store… looking at the carvings and back to the clueless you… this is when I realized Randy is no expert… I asked you what the hell you were doing to which you said, “taking pictures” you replied, I asked you, Do you really think these carvings are real? And you responded with YES. I said in disbelief… “Good God, I’ll be in my truck" and I left… Steve never said a word about the incident… One witness to this event is still my good friend and was present with us that day and can attest to what I have said should he choose to…
Mr. Lewis, It appears your meaningless apology is nothing more than the attempt of an old man trying to get into heaven… you may shit some, you may even shit many but I promise you on that final day, I will be there to stand as a witness to your actions either in your favor or against, the choice is yours… There is SO MUCH more to tell, don’t tempt me…
Note to the readers… if you find anything in this article of which you have proof to the contrary, please contact me as I have no problem correcting any error made.
I apologize to anyone who finds this article in bad taste, but when my character comes under attack, and knowing the details of what has transpired over these last 16 years, and the daily toll it has taken upon my family and I… I am justified… If Randy and Gary don’t like it, they can sue me… or they can confess, and apologize... again… Randy, I and my family are made to deal with the situation you have placed us in, and reminded of it almost daily… if you have any compassion within you what so ever, I humbly ask you, please don’t make it any worse than it already is… and I will try as I am required, to forgive you once again… should you ask… Randy, I know there is good in you... I saw the tears in your eyes when I bought you that brand new Carhart bomber jacket coat and drove to your house to give to you... now I understand why... you knew what you and Dean were doing at that very moment...
By the way, because of your deception, I am requesting the return of the tree carving I gave you which was MY first true Aspen tree carving found... after the tree had been dead for about 10 years, I pealed the bark off and bondoed the back of it then clear coated it and gave it to you as a token of true friendship... little did I know, I want it back in one peace and well taken care of... you have no doubt told everyone you showed it to, that you found it, but I doubt you were even there... please...
So to my readers, when you notice my absence and wonder why at times I am not writing, you can rest assured it is likely because I am dealing with BS as a result of the events describe in part above…
I am sorry I had to do this…
Thank you for your understanding…
I have an odd story to tell, but before doing so I’d like to ask the readers, if you know this place, please reframe from publicizing the location. I have done an interview regarding this story but have not yet wrote about it… Hope you enjoy…
In the skirts of the
Regardless of how it was created it attracts those who find it. One such case was sometime around the 1950’s when a prospector was passing by and this unique feature, a crater of sort with strange cobblestone hoodoo's caught his attention and lured him in. Investigating this old and odd geologic feature... he passed through its seeming creepy gateway to an ancient lost city like entrance and was examining the bottom floor of it when suddenly he broke through the surface falling into a cavern below. Stunned and bruised I’m sure but he managed to avoid serious injury having fallen about 15 feet below the surface.
It was devoid of light other than what was coming from the small hole above that he had fallen through. His immediate concern was how he was going to get out as he could not see how he was going to be able to reach the hole being to high above
Feeling around he found something that after moving his hands over it determined that it was some type of armor, a breast plate likely of Spanish origin. Putting it down and feeling around again picked up something that he described as a bar, gold, silver, copper or lead is unknown as he could not see for the darkness.
At that moment he notice a rope dangling through the hole and wasting no time he grabbed it and shimmied his way to freedom. Climbing out of the hole, dusting himself off and standing up he was met with a Tribal Native of the area who was staring at him with disgust and his arms folded. “Dam good thing I seen you come in here or you would have never left,” he said, “and if you ever come back you will never leave!” he added. The prospector never returned.
Some 40 plus years later a veteran of the Desert Shield war if I am not mistaken, heard the story passed down and decided he was going to investigate the site. When he arrived at the mysterious entrance and passing through he noticed up on the ledges to his left were dear heads which looked as though they had been thrown up there, strangely the heads looked to be from different stages of time showing different stages of decay.
He also mentioned seeing humanoid footprints which were much to large for any man. At some point he found a cave in the ledges in which he found a human leg bone which he took with him and later discovered it had a musket ball lodged in it, other events also mentioned… Suddenly he heard a strange and loud noise which he describe as the sound of wood binding up in a radial arm saw. As I recall something began throwing smaller rocks at him and at this point he was ready to leave and in a hurry he did. He later mentioned his experiences in war and that it was scary, but he said this place scared the hell out of him and he will not go back.
There are other incidents experienced at this place by
others, two of which I will share, several incidents concerning a large raptor
type bird, one particularly was experience by a personal friend about 8 years
ago. I have known this man for some time and find him as genuine and honest. He
told me that him and his nephew decided to go check out the previous stories.
He and his nephew were hiking towards this odd looking crater, they separated
and his nephew headed up the hill on and angle and my friend decided to
approach the site from directly below it. About the time his nephew reached the
base of the crater my friend not able to see him from below, heard a couple of
shots fired. He started up the hill and soon spotted his nephew up ahead… “What
are you doing? Lets get going” he said, his nephew replied, “We’re not going
anywhere” his nephew gesturing up ahead of him where my friend notice a huge
bird standing in the path leading up to the entrance of this crater. “Shoot the
dam thing” my friend said, “I already put rounds in him” his nephew says, “give
me that gun” my friend says and he empties the clip shooting at the bird and
presumably hitting it several times… but the bird does not move. They tried
circumventing around the bird but it would move into their path each attempt.
His nephew grabbed a long stick and tried poking at the bird to get it to move
and my friend said, it reached out with one talon and pulled the stick from his
hands and discarded it to the side…
At this time the two were a little freaked out and decided to leave. As I recall he also said that at some point they had heard a load noise come from the crater and described it similar to the description in the previous story.
The previous story about the big bird was about the 3rd I had heard in this area regarding an encounter with some strange unidentifiable large bird.
Not long after my friend told me the previous story I had relayed it to another friend of mine, within days of telling him about it, he called me up and said, you are not going to believe this…. “what” I said… then he told me that he was just talking to a friend of his who hunts that area all the time, having not yet told him the story I had relayed, his friend offered up the following…
He said that one fall in the past he was hunting dear hiking up the very ridge which leads to the crater like feature… nearing the site a dear ran up the side of the ridge topping out right on the rim of the crater, seeing it was a good sized buck he took aim and as it took of running he fired but he didn’t know if he had hit the dear as it ran to the edge of the crater jumping off the ledge disappearing in the trees below.
He and a companion hiked over the where the dear would likely be laying dead not only from gun shot but the fall the dear could not have survived. Sure enough there it was… not to far from the entrance of this strange crater and to the side. He and his companion began the processes of dressing out the dear when suddenly a few cantaloupe sized rocks came rolling down the hill at them from the trees above next to the entrance… Not thinking much about it thinking the dear must have knocked some rocks loose, he continued… pretty soon here come a few more but now it was obvious something was throwing them. Adding to the already disturbing situation they here a strange growling which they could not describe… not willing to abandoned the dear, they grabbed the hind legs and began dragging it on an angle down hill to get away from what ever it was, but as the moved down the hill what ever it was match there travel from above, growling and throwing an occasional rock… he said it wasn’t until they got all the way to the bottom and out in the clearing that it finally stopped and they were able finish dressing the dear and take it back to camp.
“Did you tell them my story prior to this?” I asked… “No”, he said, “but I did right after he told me his story!”
I don’t know what has happened at this place in the
past, but we have had two expeditions into the crater since with no real
strange occurrence, one friend took some video and took some good shots, at one
point he noticed what appeared to be a very large nest up in the ledges/trees
estimating about 6 foot or better in diameter, when he got home to review the
footage, he noticed something moving and peaking out from the nest. He has yet
to go back…
In one case as a result of the description of the bird given,
we have decided the bird could have been a Harpy Eagle, but they are not known to be
this far North....
